Is it really required to charge between 20% and 80% on my MINI?

Quick question about charging electric vehicles! Is it best to keep the battery charged between specific levels, as we do with iPhones? Does constantly charging to 100% harm the battery's health?

This 20%-80% thing always sparks a debate when it comes to EVs and even to smartphones. While I haven't noticed any battery damage from charging to 100% in the past 4 years of owning an EV, it's still important to consider the possibility of slight degradation over time. I believe that it will reduce your overall battery range in the long run.

In the end, to each his own.

I agree. Also, I think it's too short to be charging to 80% regularly, especially when you're doing long road trips. We're buying our car to enjoy it ;)

EVs battery health is pretty similar to what we’ve learned from smartphones like iPhones. Charging to 100% all the time isn’t necessarily harmful in the short term, but over time, it can cause the battery to degrade faster. The sweet spot for battery longevity in most EVs, including your MINI, is between 20% and 80%. lithium-ion batteries, which most EVs use, don't like being charged to full or drained to 0%.

The idea is to avoid stressing the battery. keep it within a moderate range. If you’re just driving around town or don’t need that full range every day, charging up to 80% is usually more than enough. Save the 100% charges for when you’re planning a longer trip. The battery management systems in modern EVs are pretty smart, though, so charging to 100% now and then won’t ruin your battery, it’s just about minimizing that stress to get the longest lifespan possible. ✌

I’ve had my MINI SE for a while now, and I’ve learned that keeping the charge between 20% and 80% is definitely the way to go if you want to maintain battery health. It’s kind of like how we handle our phones—constantly charging it to 100% and letting it drop to 0% can speed up battery wear. sticking to that mid-range, you’re reducing the strain on the battery cells. I charge mine up to around 80% for day-to-day driving, and it’s more than enough for my needs around town.

it’s totally fine to charge to 100% if you need that extra range for a road trip or something. Just try not to do it all the time. Most EVs, including the MINI, have built-in battery management systems that help prevent too much wear and tear, but staying in that 20-80% range when you can is a good habit to keep the battery lasting as long as possible. 👍

it’s actually a good idea to keep your MINI SE’s battery between 20% and 80% for everyday charging. It’s all about the longevity of the lithium-ion battery. These tend to degrade faster when charged to 100% or drained completely to 0% regularly. like your smartphone, constantly charging it to 100% and draining it down to 0% can lead to quicker battery wear over time. The same principle applies to EVs, just on a larger scale.

Charging to 100% occasionally is fine when you need the extra range for a long trip. In fact, MINI’s battery management system is designed to protect the battery from excessive damage, so it won’t immediately harm it. But if you’re just driving around town or doing short commutes, keeping the battery within that 20-80% range is a smart move to prolong its overall health. Plus, you’ll still have more than enough range for everyday needs without pushing the battery to its limits.

The whole “20% to 80%” rule is definitely something to keep in mind for your MINI. Charging the battery fully all the time or letting it drop too low can wear out the cells faster, kind of like what happens with your phone if you always let it go to 0%. With EVs, sticking to that middle range (20-80%) helps keep the battery healthy for longer, especially if you’re just using it for short daily drives.

That said, don’t stress too much about hitting 100% every once in a while, especially if you’re planning a longer trip. The MINI’s battery system is pretty advanced and can handle full charges here and there. It’s just good to make a habit of keeping it within that range when you don’t need all the range. It’s one of those little things you can do to keep your EV running smoothly for years to come. 👍
