Recirculation control is not staying on

Been using the recirculation system in my car to block those fumes, especially in stop-and-go traffic. Here's the weird thing: whenever I press the recirculation button, the green light comes on for about 30 seconds and then turns off! Doesn't matter how many times I press it, same story. Is this a common issue? Am I missing something simple, or is there a bigger problem?
